Home Game Intro |
Ok, so here's the introduction to the game tutorial. Essentially, I've always wanted to make a video game since I was a wee little boy, but never bothered to figure out how. In recent years, however, many tools have been created to vastly simplify the process so I've decided to give it a go. The basic premise will be a game where you use something called a "kinect" to track your body and in the game you essentially fight enemies in a rpg/action-ish type fasion. The basic problem with this, of course, is that every attempt to make a game like this (that I've seen so far, anyways) has failed or not been completed. A combination of programming controls being complicated to implement and the lag of the kinect frustrating players results in poor reviews for these types of games. So part of the challange will be overcoming that difficulty. However, initially, we pretty much just want any game at all. Crappy controls or not . So everything for this tutorial/journal will be freely available with the exception of the kinect. At the time of this writing (March 10/2014) Kinect 2.0 is out for the new Xbox but not available for indie development (yet). It's supposed to be released sometime this year, but for now I'll be using my kinect 1.0. If you can't afford one, I'll assume you're like 12 and therefore it's illegal for someone to employ you. If you're a student and need all your spending money for beer and lattes, the controller part can be subbed out for a keyboard or spare controller if you have one. I guess. Or just buy a Kinect... I'll go over the tools I'll be using in the next section. If I can think of/know of paying alternatives I'll try and mention them as well. |
